Junior Paleontology 2021!

Junior Paleontology is a kid’s summer program hosted by the Cranbrook History Centre, made possible by funding from the East Kootenay Chamber of Mines and Canada Summer Jobs. Each camp day, we will explore the unique paleontology and geology of the East Kootenays. Through fun, hands-on projects, fossil enthusiasts will learn about evolution, the environment, geology, and paleontology!

*Due to concerns surrounding COVID-19, spaces will be limited to 12 children per class. Social distancing measures will be in place, as well as frequent hand washing and tool sanitization. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

This summer, we will be extending our camps to run all day from 9:30 to 3:30 on Mondays. Our Junior Paleontology Camp will also be running in a series of four subjects for kids ages 6-11. The first series will run on July 5, 12, 19, and 26 and, the second series will take place on August 9, 16, 23, and 30. The topics will be in the order of geology, evolution and extinction, fossils, and paleontology. Parents are welcome to sign up for all four days or for single days. Our programs are designed to be as active as possible with plenty of hands-on learning!

We’re Sold Out!

Here’s a sneak peek of what we have planned!

Day 1: July 5 and August 9 | 9:30am – 3:30pm
Day 1 will focus on geology. The featured activity will be a rock-making simulation. In this activity, campers will be able to explore the processes behind the formation of rocks. An interactive rock cycle game will introduce the key concepts in the featured activity! Geological time will be broken down through visual reenactment in an interactive activity.

Day 2: July 12 and August 16 9:30am – 3:30pm
Day 2 is centered around evolution and extinction. This camp will be activity-based to get campers moving while they learn about these big-picture ideas. Campers will get to transform themselves into endangered and extinct species in a mask making activity. Campers will also get the chance to flex their creative muscles as they face off in an evolution battle! This activity will help with understanding the importance of adapting to the environment!

Day 3: July 19 and August 23 | 9:30am – 3:30pm
Fossils will be brought back to life on day 3! This camp will be focused on hands-on exploration. Campers will have the opportunity to explore our fossil collection and also create their own to take home. Some other activities include assembling fossils and creating fossil casts that can be taken home or extracted on day 4.

Day 4: July 26 and August 30 | 9:30am – 3:30pm
The final class will combine everything they learned to become official Junior Paleontologists. The Cranbrook History Centre will be bringing back rock breaking for the last day of our 4-week series! Campers will also get to make their own fossilized amber slime and a miniature dinosaur exhibition.

Full Camp: July 5, 12, 19, 26 or August 9, 16, 23, 30 | 9:30am – 3:30pm

Experience all four days jam packed with activities that range from geology to evolution, extinction, fossils and becoming paleontologists. Registrations for the full camp come at a reduced price and offers kids a chance to learn about many different parts of paleontology and geology.
