SUMMARY:Downtown Historic Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Our Historic Downtown Walking Tour takes place Thursday nights from 7-8pm. It runs every Thursday in July and August. The tour will depart on Bake Street outside of Cranbrook Photo and visitors will walk throughout the downtown core. You will learn about the many historic buildings that once populated Cranbrook’s historic downtown\, some that are not longer present today. The tour concludes outside the Mount Baker Hotel\, a restored 1923 building that now houses a local restaurant and our 2021 walking tour partner\, Soulfood\, and the renovated hotel. Tickets are $7.50 and can be purchased online\, below\, or in person at the museum. Thank you to Soulfood for their partnership in this year’s Summer Walking Tours. A lecture by featured paleontologist\, Guy Santucci. He will speak to the amazing specimens that can be found locally in the Columbia Basin\, and share what it’s really like to delve into amateur paleontology.\nA Catered Reception featuring pastries made by local business\, Hot Shots\, and a cash bar.\nPrivate Fossil Collections on Display\, with a chance to speak with local amateur paleontologists about their collections and their work.\n\n\n\nRegister now for a chance to talk everything Paleontology and Fossil-related with us! DESCRIPTION:The Cranbrook History Centre Paleontology Field School features 4-days of programming around building amateur paleontology skills. \nThe Field School: Day 1 is the second day of programming\, following the program’s opening Lecture and Reception. It will take place as a full day of programming on September 18th\, where attendees will be visiting the KM62 site on the Bull River. \nThe site\, specifically chosen by Guy Santucci and Dr. Howard Allen\, will be the perfect place for them to lead interpretation of the geological and paleontological formations found there. They will guide you through the paleontological process to find fossils of your own.  Lunch is included in the price and\, it consists of a sandwich\, a square\, and a drink from local business Auntie Barb’s Bakery.  All tools and safety equipment will be provided. \nPLEASE NOTE: Participants are required to use their own vehicles to reach the site. Maps\, directions\, and GPS coordinates will be provided to all participants to ensure safe arrival to the site.  All-Wheel Drive cars with ground clearance are required to get to the sites. If you do not have this access we will organize ride sharing for those who are willing to go to the site together. \nRegistration limited to 15 people\, so be sure to register before it’s too late! \nClick Here to Register

DESCRIPTION:  \nToddler Tuesdays is an off-season (September – May) program that takes place at the Cranbrook History Centre on the last Tuesday of every month. \nAs a way of connecting our community with our collections\, the museum is partnering with the Cranbrook Public Library to conduct the monthly program. The hour long program consists of a free story time led by the library\, and a fun and family friendly craft activity to complete afterwards. DESCRIPTION:The Cranbrook History Centre Paleontology Field School features 4-days of programming around building amateur paleontology skills. \nThe Paleontology Lab visit is the fourth and final day of programming\, following the program’s opening Lecture and Reception\, and two full days out in the field. \nThe lab consists of a visit to Chris New’s personal Fossil Preparation Laboratory. Chris New is a local paleontologist who has expertise collecting fossils in the Cranbrook region. His lab is the site where many fossils now housed in the museum collection were prepared. \nDuring the visit\, Chris will provide you with a personal tour of his lab and discuss the different tools and techniques used to prepare his outstanding specimens. \nBecause of the lab size\, participants will register for a 30-minute time slot. A museum staff member will be present throughout all of the lab visits to ensure that safety and public health protocols are being followed. \nRegistration for the Paleontology Lab visit is included in the purchase of a Field School date in the program. SUMMARY:Ed Talk: Sharing our Story \, Living on a Métis Road Allowance
DESCRIPTION:**Our September Ed Talk will be taking place on Zoom**\nJoin the Cranbrook History Centre on Zoom on September 29th to welcome Métis Elder Marie Schoenthal\, and cutural facilitator\, Amy Cross. From 7 – 8:30 pm MT we will be diving into Marie’s lived experience growing up on a Métis Road Allowance. \nMarie lived on a Métis Road Allowance until she was 15 years old\, and shares her experiences of living off the land\, harvesting animals\, berries and living in a small one-room house with her family. Marie grew up speaking Michif\, the traditional language of the Métis people and discusses the transition school and learning English. This in-depth story shares the hardships of living off the land\, and the abuse that she faced growing up. This is a once in a lifetime experience that journey’s you back to the early 1900’s in Canadian history\, Marie’s story is educational\, heartwarming\, engaging and is appropriate for all ages.   \n  \nAbout Our Speakers:\nMarie Schoenthal\, Métis Elder\, mentor\, and Kokum was raised in the small road allowance community in Crooked Lake\, Saskatchewan\, where she grew up with 2 brothers and 4 sisters. Marie is a fluent Michif speaker\, who has very involved in the Métis community in Medicine Hat and Calgary\, teaching Michif\, jigging and cultural practices to community members. Marie currently lives in Calgary\, and has 3 children 4 grandchildren\, 4 great grandchildren. She enjoys being with her family\, listening to old time fiddle music\, jigging and a good belly laugh.  \n  \n  \nAmy Cross is a Métis woman who is very proud of her Métis cultural background\, and infuses it into all aspects of her life. She has worked in the Indigenous field for over 20 years\, in various capacities\, although her passion is the Métis people and culture. Amy\, has taken her inspiration from her mentors Marie Schoenthal and Jeannette Hansen both Métis Elders\, and respected in the Métis community across Canada. Amy\, can also be found in nature\, and infuses her love of the environment into her art. Her current passion is pebble art and has recently\, started a business called Pebble Art from Nature. Amy\, is married has two children\, and currently living in Cranbrook BC.    \n  \n  \n  \n[gravityform id=”17″ title=”true” description=”true”]
