Do you always ask questions about the world around you? If so\, you would make a great Young Historian! \nThis Family Day weekend\, we invite all our curious Young Historians to share their own histories with us.  At the Cranbrook History Centre’s pop-up Family Memories booth\, bring your family in to record your OWN history. Young Historians will ask their family members questions and share their own stories about what happened in the past year. \nYour stories are important!\nYoung Historians who share their memories can help the Cranbrook History Centre to record what the last year has been like in Cranbrook for future generations. Share you stories about what your life has been like under lockdown and your experiences with social restrictions. We will be preserving your recordings in our archive to save the memories of what living through the pandemic was like for the families of Cranbrook and the East Kootenay. \nAll Young Historians will receive a digital copy of your story after your visit\, so that you can hold onto your memories for the future. \nDo you plan on staying home this Family Day?\nYou can still participate in the Young Historians program online. Instructions for how to participate will be available from Friday February 12th\, 2021.\nWe gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Province of British Columbia that makes this program possible.

SUMMARY:BC Heritage Week 2021
DESCRIPTION:It’s BC Heritage Week! To celebrate we’ve put together a quiz of Cranbrook’s ‘firsts’ to test your knowledge of #Cranbrookheritage. Everyone who completes the quiz will be entered to win a beautiful\, framed print of the Cranbrook St. Eugene Hospital generously donated by Dave Humphrey. The print has been framed with wood remaining from the hospital building after it was destroyed by fire in 2002. To earn bonus entries share this quiz on Facebook and Instagram and be sure to tag us @cbkhistorycentre.\n“Heritage is our legacy from the past\, what we live with today and we pass on to future generations. Our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration\, our touchstone\, our reference point\, our identity.” UNESCO\nClick Here to start the quiz!\n  \n \nThe building of the Hospital was started in 1900 on five acres of land donated by Colonel Baker. On February 6th\, 1901\, patients were transferred to this new building\, together with a staff of six Sisters and their Mother Superior. Over the next 67 years the hospital buildings were expanded and housed hundreds of patients\, many nurses and many doctors. \nAbout the artist: Lloyd Gordon Burgess (1913-1988)\, was raised in Cranbrook and both his wife and her sister took their nurses’ training in the old building. Lloyd’s wife passed away in 1986 and he wanted to produce a print in her memory and to donate it to the nurses at their St. Eugene Nurses’ Reunion.  Sadly Lloyd passed away before he was able to complete his pen and ink drawing.  Lloyd’s son\, Bryan Burgess\, completed the original print and donated it to the nurses. This original print was handed over to the Green Home where it still hangs today.  Bryan produced a limited run of prints from this original and this is one of those prints now reunited in a frame made with some of the original St. Eugene Hospital wooden timbers. \n*You must be a resident of Canada to win. \n  \n#explorecranbrook #localhistory #bcheritageweek
