SUMMARY:Ed Talk – Cranbrook’s Lost sons with Cranbrook Canadian Legion
DESCRIPTION:Speakers will be representative from Cranbrook’s Canadian Legion as well as a local veteran. We will explore what the legion does to support veterans in our community.  We will also share stories and remember some of our local heroes from the Rotary Park Cenotaph in a segment called ‘Cranbrook’s Lost Sons.\nOur speakers:\nDebi Hart\nDebi is third generation born and raised in Cranbrook. She has worked for the Cranbrook Royal Canadian Legion for 11 years and is the Secretary/Manager.\nDebi has 3 uncles who served in Europe during WWII\, their names are engraved on the Wall of Honour. He Great Uncle was wounded at Passchendaele during WWI.\nHer passion is always honouring our veterans. For several years she has worked with other Legion Members and veterans to preserve and protect the cenotaph and Wall of Honour in Cranbrook\, paying them the respect they deserve.\nMarolyn Morrison\nMarolyn is on the Board of Directors for the Royal Canadian Legion #24 in Cranbrook.\nMarolyn’s Grandfather served in the Army in WW1 and in the 2nd WW her Stepfather served in the Airforce and her Father in law served in the Army.\nMarolyn has 2 sons who have served in the Canadian Military. Her daughter in law still serves. Marolyn is committed to serving Veterans and their families.\nCorey Cross – Veteran\nCorey was born and raised in Cranbrook\, he joined the Canadian Army in 2010. He served 8 years in the Light Infantry.\nAfter releasing in 2018 and moving back home to Cranbrook\, he found out there was no support for veterans in the interior of BC\, he started the Egress Veteran Society in 2023 and they are now helping veterans in multiple cities across the Kootenays.\nCorey has been working with the Legion connecting to veterans in the area. He is also on the committee to preserve and protect the cenotaph and Wall of Honour.\nhttps://form.jotform.com/253014857049257

SUMMARY:Winter Day Camp - Painting & Pottery
DESCRIPTION:Pottery has played a crucial role in human history\, serving as a vital resource for archeologists in understanding ancient cultures and daily life. Pottery is not only functional but also a medium for artistic expression\, reflecting cultural identities. \nWe will also explore how to make paint using natural resources. For instance\, the Ktunaxa used Namita qakxaǂ ʔitkniǂni ʔaknusmi\, “Paint made from red clay”. This natural source found locally provided the Ktunaxa with materials for creating vibrant reds\, used in art and for other traditional purposes. \nPottery and painting allow children to explore their imagination and creativity. Transforming a lump of clay into unique creations\, fosters a sense of ownership and boosts self esteem by having pride in their work. During this Day Camp we will visit Cranbrook Arts for a session in their pottery studio and a chance to paint their works of art! \n8:30am-4:00pm \nAges 5-10 \n$55.00 + GST \nREGISTER HERE \n

SUMMARY:Ed Talk - A 100 years of history with the Cranbrook Library
DESCRIPTION:In 1912\, a visitor to Cranbrook felt “something is wrong with the people.” He lamented “In all my travels over British Columbia…Cranbrook is the only city of importance which I have visited in which there is no public library.” This was not the first nor the last complaint of this nature. Every since the railway’s arrival in 1898\, the growing population wondered why Cranbrook was a town without books. Mike Selby will tell the fascinating story of Cranbrook’s struggle to obtain a public library\, and how it kept it open for a full century. The story of the Cranbrook Public Library is the story of Cranbrook itself. \n  \nBio: \nMike Selby is an award-winning author\, columnist\, and professional librarian. He has been a guest lecturer at universities across North America and South Africa\, and has been interviewed by both NPR and the Washington Post. His book Freedom Libraries: The Untold Story of Libraries for African Americans in the South\, won the Outstanding Academic Text of the Year (2020) from the Association of College and Research Libraries. More recently he was chief consultant on the film\, Are You A Librarian? He is currently the Deputy Director of the Cranbrook Public Library. \n  \nRegister here \n  \nIf registration fills up please email programs@cranbrookhistorycentre.com to join a wait list.
